The city is to host one of
the biggest exhibitions of Islam in the region in an effort
to dispel myths and create understanding between
communities.
Leicester Exhibition
Centre, LEC, on Belgrave Gate is set to launch the RAMADAN
SHOPPING FESTIVAL 2010 to coincide with the holy month of
Ramadhan, which starts on Friday/Sunday (corr August 20/29)
which hopes to "combat the myths, misconceptions and
misunderstandings of Islam".
Organisers say the 10-day
event, which takes place on AUGUST 20, will attract
thousands of visitors from across the UK to the city. It is
hoped that the event will help to improve relations between
Muslims and the wider community and become an annual event.
Event Organiser, said:
“Ramadan Shopping Festival 2010 came about because we felt
we wanted to have a dialogue with the wider community and
highlight the history of religion and the positive impact
Islam has had on everyday life. This is a fantastic medium
in which people from all backgrounds regardless of their
religion can learn about Islam.
“The hope is that all
kinds of people will visit, from across the Midlands and the
UK, and go away thinking about Islam in a positive way. We
are also hoping that by holding it in the holy month of
Ramadhan we can also show what fasting means to Muslims
throughout the world and are encouraging all backgrounds to
join us.
“We are hoping thousands
of people attend the event over the 10 days and the feedback
we have received from various people and organisations has
been very positive.”
The Ramadhan Shopping
Festival 2010– the biggest of its kind ever in the UK – with
around 100 exhibitors showcasing their wares from food,
clothing, and financial services to property. Last year, the
event attracted over 50,000 visitors from across the UK.
"In addition, it will
enhance Leicester’s reputation for cultural and creative
diversity. We hope it can become an annual event."
